What a day! We started off biking to Flüelen , hadn’t gone far and were turned back by some road signs saying “Bikes, take the train or ferry for this section .extreme danger ” No problem, we’ll take the train.
The next section was lovely ,Flüelen to Erstfeld
I’ve been looking forward to the train ride to Oberalppass for a long time. Erstfeld is where the new Base Gotthard tunnel begins and runs 57 kms under the alps to Bellinzona in Italy, but we aren’t taking it. We are heading uuuup on what must be one of the most scenic railways in the world.
that church is at the centre of a great spiral. When we first saw it we were looking up at it but passed it 3 times as the track spiralled it’s way up until we were looking way down at it.
A power station on one of the countless streams , is owned by the railways and provides all the power for the trains in this region, making them energy self sufficient
At Göschenen the old high altitude tunnel cuts through to Italy but we need to go higher ,so we change to a cog railway here that takes us up a steep valley to Andermatt. One more change of train here to take us up the side of a mountain to one of the highest passes in the Swiss alps.
In just a few moments Andermatt was way below us. The bikes were up beside the driver so we had a great view.
Oberalppass.! 2260m .That lighthouse marks the source of the Rhine. That ice is headed for Rotterdam. Fabulous ride down !! For the first 15kms we just clung onto the brakes and whooped and screamed like a couple of kids
The weather is closing in behind us. That’s Sedrun golf course. We’ll stop at Sedrun for the night 5kms further down
This’ll do. It’s a ski village but quiet now in the off season so heaps of accomodation.
