Neuburg am Rhein šŸ‡©šŸ‡Ŗ

We were told to be sure to see this masterpiece before we left Soufflenheim. Made in 1932 by local artisans, it’s a full sized replica of Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper. All in local ceramics. It’s too long to get it all in and behind glass as well , but it was a beautiful piece.Heading to Seltz the trail runs along the top of a massive stop bank. Sunny day, tail wind, new bike , cest la vie !But what’s this contraption? It’s the worlds only cable ferryA floating bridge comes out nearly half way over the river, then this strange looking 3 hulled ferry ,crabs sideways over to it . Attached to a cable that is 20 metres off the river, the force of the current sends it quickly to the other side just by turning the huge ruddersSee the cable ? There’s a big pulley on the cross cable over the river ,which is pulled along by the ferryLove it! The power for the electrics and hydraulics is from solar panels ,as well as a water wheel under it ,driven by the current ( about 8 knots of current here). We went across on it to have our coffee break in Germany. The trail is right on the river now as we pass one ship after another. Mostly tankers taking fuel from Rotterdam to an inland port in Basil. We’ve booked an hotel in Neuburg am Rhein for tonight only intending to bike 35kms. With the side trips and a zig zagging trail it’s been 55 kms !. We still get here early before the hotel opens so we pop down to the museum. It was closed but a delightful lady came out of the Rathaus and not only opened it up for us, but bought us coffee. The old house showed life here 100 years ago and another building showed the history of life on the river around here. When we said we needed a shop she said no problem , follow me. ( struth! We had trouble keeping up ). Thanks Maryanne . The little shop was tucked away, down a side street and sold local produceWhat a gem! The owner not only spoke good English but gave us some hard boiled eggs as well.( I’d asked her what the coloured eggs were)

She asked what on earth we were doing in their village as there was ‘nothing there’

On the contrary, it’s on the bike trail, and what makes these places special is the lovely people you meet when you’re on a bike šŸ¤—
