Germany beat Sweden in the last minute ! Not ground shaking news in New Zealand but boy it was big here. The horn tooting continued until after midnight. This section of the Rhein is very industrial with lots of loading points for the ships. (Yes ,sometimes I spell Rhein the German way and sometimes the English way.Rhine.) The trail was easy to find today and mostly hugged the riverThe first things you discuss when you stop and chat are ” where are you going” then “where did you start from, where are you from? ” these lads are from Romania. The one on the right is an engineer, the other a Pastor. Sorry I didn’t catch your names boys. About 15kms before Mainz is Nierstein. There’s a very interesting memorial to the USA army engineers that put a bridge over hereAn outstanding feat that apparently shortened the war by weeks. It took them just 18 hours to put across !Traffic is getting heavier now and you need to concentrate on keeping right. Mainz is the start of the wine country, and the hills are closing in on the river.

Mainz. There’s a huge festival in town.This guy was fantastic. There were several stages, 1000’s of People, cruise ships…. We found an apartment really close then booked in early so we could really enjoy it all. ( and watch Roger Federer play ) sigh…
