Roden-Kirchen

No wifi and no breakfast but it was only €60 and we prefer bananas and yoghurt anyway. I used the wifi in the town centre again to wish my son in law and my sister a happy birthday…got them both wrong? Just can’t get used to this time differenceLeaving Linz through the town gates. Once outside the gate a ferry was turning up so we took that as an omen that we should be on the other sideThis is the sunny side so we both stripped off. Lovely morning,

At Remagen there are the remains of a very famous bridge

Alfred from The Nederlands as we discuss WW2. This was the only bridge left intact over the Rhein and for that Hitler had 5 of his officers executed.

Road and rail right above us , ships beside us, but still surprisingly quiet. It’s 10.00 already and we’re looking for the next coffee stopI know we burn a few calories but I suspect we’re replacing them ,(and then some !) The chaps behind us are a tour group. All with the same bikes and panniersMehlem . Still seeing forts and castlesAnd massive industrial areas. This crane is transferring fertiliser from one barge onto another. As we approach Koln, (Cologne) I’m starting to recognise things from our trip south through here 2 years ago. This stretch was under water and we had to go up that side roadNo such problems this time.! Bernd explained the head winds we always seem to get from about mid day . Apparently it happens every day and that’s how the sailing ships in the old days could get upstream. We’ve stopped just 5kms short of Cologne at a small town, Roden-Kirchen
