Eberswalde

Our apartment last night was in the outer suburb of Zepernick. The bike compartment on the train was so jam packed with commuters going home that we couldn’t get on the first one and even on the next train we were packed in like sardines. We shared the hotel with this couple touring on their Vespa and sidecar. North of Berlin is mostly forests and lakes and they use the same system as Holland to get about. I still have no idea ,with all this help ,how we managed to take a wrong road. Maybe it was the long place names that all sound so similar to us By this signpost we’d realised our (my ) blunder and so changed course towards a larger town BiesenthalThe lady at the information centre was so helpful and gave us some great maps to help us get there. The maps don’t show the surface though and the route was cobblestones and metal for 5kmsshi shi shi shiiiit ! My poor bike. All the other bike tracks have been smooth hot mix . We’re on a quiet road now, (70 km speed limit through the forests because of the deer ). This is the village of Sachsenhausen where high quality paper has been made since 1760. They invented a paper that couldn’t be counterfeited and From 1874 up until 1945, all the paper for Germany’s currency was made here. Later, Soviet police found the dies for making fake US dollars and British pound notes here.!! The manager was executed ( private enterprise was NOT encouraged)The little mill just up the road was using some ancient tractors I love the old gear lying aroundEberswalde . Our hotel is very close to the Oder canal which we will follow north tomorrow. This canal links Berlin with the Baltic Sea and the reason for this massive guillotiné gate is that 7 kms downstream is the famous Schiffshebewerk ship lift. I’m really looking forward to seeing it in the morning
