Getting out of Poland with bikes is proving difficult. We’re trying to get to the same latitude as GdaÅ„sk before we start biking again at Vilnius in Lithuania. For some reason cross border trains out here in the Baltic states, only run in the weekends. We need to keep moving if we’re ever going to bike all the way around so I investigated the buses. Heaps of them ,but only one company, eurolines, will take bikes and they have to be packaged. We’ve learnt not to trust all we read so we went down to the bus depot last night at 11.45 to ask the driver. Yes , but you’ll have to pay an extra 30 Zlotys. ( $12 ) Great , the tickets are dirt cheap anyway.
I used a tarp to wrap them with, We’ve got it down to a fine art now and it didn’t take long. Just about done and the heavens opened up.
BLOODY good day to be in a bus. It stopped shortly after and we were able to enjoy the trip. There is no way you could cycle on a main road in this part of Europe which is why we need to get onto EV11 at Vilnius .The trucks were so thick they looked like they were linked together , and there’s no berm to speak of. This is a monotonous way to travel though and we’re itching to get biking again.
My god but Poland is huge ! Fairly flat and uninteresting through the middle but it did get prettier up near the Northern border with Lithuania. The villages up here can only be described as drab ! We arrived at 8.00pm, caught a taxi to the hotel , hanging out for a hot bath . ” Mr Wallis ? No sir , I have a reservation for you but it is for tomorrow night”. Shit ! He booked us in to another one a short bike ride away bless his heart .Now all it needs to do is stop raining and we’re off.
