Turku

It’s dead still, 6.30 on Sunday morning. Just as we came up over this rise in a clearing we came across 4 deer, including a little fawn. Christines bright jacket isn’t good for sneaking up on deer and they were gone in a flash. I was leading going downhill into the next valley , fairly steep and I was moving fast, when I surprised a really big one grazing the side of the road. He panicked and instead of heading off into the bush he came out and galloped along in front of me. I was gaining on him as it was pretty steep, I thought briefly of taking my camera out but in a rare moment of common sense decided against it. Whew !It was only 15kms into Turku so we were too early to go to tonight’s B n B . Filled in time having breakfast at McDonald’s, sending off emails etc ,then had a brief look around. Turku is built along this river and is a major shipping port. This whales tale is made of steel and coloured glass. The B n B let us drop the bags off early so we took the bikes and went sightseeing . An international market was happening on both sides of the river. Good marketing ploy. I probably paid twice the supermarket price for his dried fruit.Italien cheese, bring up the statue behind. A double decker bus full of fudgeand even an Aussie barby. It was still too early for the crowds. Christine bought ear rings off some Arab .Down at the port end there’s a wonderful maritime museum and the wharf is full of ancient vessels of all sorts. An old passenger ship the ‘Bare ‘ is now a floating hostel and cafe so we had lunch on her. The ferry terminal is next door and these trucks are waiting for tonight’s crossing. Unfortunately we couldn’t get a night crossing, they’re too popular and need booking well in advance so we catch tomorrow mornings crossing at 8.30Turku castle. Very ordinary as far as castles go. I checked our tickets at the ferry terminal nearby and found that I’d only booked one bike . All sorted now, difficult sometimes on line. On the way back to our B n B we came across this old farm house and court yard right in the middle of the city and next to the river. Amazing !, how it never got bowled in the name of progress way back, I’ll never know. ( note the wooden spouting)I had to stoop to get inside and the staff at the cafe were all in period costumes. It’s been a very relaxing day.. We like Turku
