The Vasa

We’re leaving the bikes today as we expect to be in amongst a lot of tourists. But first things first , we need some Swedish Kroner. 100 kroner is about $16 NZ .Hard to get used to.This museum is the most visited in the whole of Scandinavia and even at 9.30 ( we came by ferry ) it was getting busyWhen Vasa was raised from the bottom of the harbour in 1961, she had been there for more than 330 years. She is 98% original and when she was barged to her present home, they built the museum around her. She carried 68 cannon originally although some were sold by the government back then. One was tested and was accurate up to 1.4 kms!But what makes this restoration so remarkable is because of the quality of the water every thing was in such good condition. Only 35 crew died, trapped in the gun decks, and the bodies still had shoes ,some clothes , some hair even! This cross section shows some of the lay out and virtually everything you can see was there. (Except thé crew)The model also shows one of the reasons she fell over. Not enough stone ballast. Combine that with a beam of only 12 metres, 52 metres high , and it’s no wonder that on her maiden trip she got less than one kilometre before a gust of wind blew her over. The admiral told the King it needed more work and he had reservations but the king wanted to show her off to the people. Some show 😂Ok, time to have a look around Stockholm. Let’s start with some Swedish liquorice. What a beautiful city. Lots of parks, palaces and tourists by the bus load .(and cruise ship load)Unfortunately that also brings the Gypsy’s. Begging ,picking pockets and running the old street scams. The Old Town. We loved Stockholm but not the hoards of people and we’ll be glad to get back on the bikes tomorrow.
