We started off through a bit more forest this morning . Spotted another deer. The pine forest is different here. It’s floor is just one large carpet of moss and these tiny ferns. No real undergrowth. It’s eerily quiet, no wind no bird noise, just the sound of our tyres.
After 20kms we pass through Mahult.
Simlångsdalen. A grocery store was open and this one had coffee.
We consider it our duty to try out as many cakes and pastry’s as we can from each country and to rate them. Mmm bit dry, too much sugar. Sorry Sweden you’re not scoring well I’m afraid.
We read our books for an hour as we are only biking 46kms today and had lots of time. It’s been wonderful. A sunny day and mostly downhill all the way as we head for the coast. Quite by accident we came across this old railway line and stayed on it for the last 20kms into Helmstad. ( as I mentioned, the tourist information has been dismal and we had no information on these sort of routes)
Even tried the old selfie stick. Whoops! Whoops! Nearly came a cropper…
Helmstad. This is the first thing we saw. The chaplain showed us around . It’s a beautiful building
our hotel/ hostel is part of the university, very good and very cheap( for Sweden). We left the bikes there, (in our bedroom ) and went into the town centre
The old north gate. Helmstad was once part of Denmark and the fort was to keep the Swedes out. I know, it’s complicated !
It’s a lovely old town , car free, although there were plenty of cyclists.
It’s good to be on the coast again. The sound of seagulls, parking lots for boats while you go shopping…
Even the library reaches out to the sea.
Isn’t that something else ?
