We knew we were in for showers this morning but we need to make 50kms on average a day so we made sure everything was well wrapped in plastic bags , put on our ponchos and set off.
just out of Busum the little village of Büsumer Deichhausen is where we start along the north sea Dyke. It’s just a steady drizzle and we’re quite warm.
The size of these dykes has to be seen to be believed. It’s misty and the tide is out so far I can’t see the sea. There’s another smaller dyke about a km inland. The hardest thing about today was having to ride past 1000s of mushrooms! The weathers perfect for them and surprisingly,no one was picking them ?
6kms along thé bank we turned inland to Meldorf. That’s a pumping station
Apart from the wind farms , there’s 100s of acres of solar farms. From a distance they look like they’re wasting good land but as you can see the sheep still graze amongst them and are probably happy for the shelter
There’s been signs up since Gudendorf warning of a road closure on this route to Brunsbüttel. We stopped and had a chat with this chap coming the other way and he assured us that he got through . At least I think that’s what he said. We carried on anyway. He insisted on taking our photo
Perhaps he works for a fashion magazine.
It was closed but they hadn’t taken the road block away even though the road was usable again
Approaching Brunsbüttel we took this ferry across the Nord Ostee canal. We had just spoken to some locals to find the way to the Cuxhaven ferry as that was where we planned to stay for the night. LUCKILY we hadn’t booked ahead as that ferry hadn’t been running for 2 years. We will have to head east for 25 kms tomorrow to get the only ferry across the Elbe this side of Hamburg.
Flatty ! Only the second in 3500 kms so can’t complain. It was just past here that we boarded another ferry thinking, this is strange there must be 2 outlets to this canal. DUUUH we were just about to go back over the same canal ,heading in the wrong direction.
Family holiday. There’s another little baby in the box on his bike. He’s also pulling a trailer with all their gear on. We must have looked funny running back off the ferry, funnier still half an hour later when we decided that we would cross it anyway and find a hotel in the middle of Brunsbüttel .
The town was full of cyclists so we popped into a good looking one in the town centre and got the last room. Whew
