St Maurice

Saddling up

We may still be in Switzerland but this is 100% France in all other ways. We left at 7.30 because it was Sunday and there wouldn’t be the traffic. Planned to buy breakfast on the way ,but completely forgot that supermarkets or dairies don’t open on Sundays in France.

The geriatric NZ cycling team

Beautiful morning, no wind and hardly a soul around. The valley is almost entirely grape vineyards now with every inch of the available hills terraced

Saillon. Another ancient fortification guards the valley
Vétroz. The only cafe open in 20 kms.

Coffee break !! Except all they had was pastries or bread . Not good fuel for cycling

It’s also a good apricot area and the parks had them as ornamentals. They needed thinning

Well! That filled me up some more. We are just about to enter the part where the Rhone takes a sharp turn north to lake Geneva. On the map it looked crowded with roads and railways and I thought it would be a difficult stage

Not so ! It was well signposted and a ’bikes only ‘road all the way to St Maurice where we’re staying

We met up with the French couple again as they left Fully. We hadn’t intended going far today so when we came to St Maurice at about 11.30, it was so pretty we decided to stay the night. An easy 40 kms rest day

St Maurice main drag

There’s a monastery here that has a hotel wing. The Hotel Franciscaine , so we’re booked in for a retreat. ( kidding kidding )

There’s been monks here for over 1500 years, they built the hotel in the 80s for seminars and wondering cycling sinners.

It started getting busier in the evening when we went out for dinner
