Bellegarde sur Valserine

Breakfast was delivered to our room this morning at 7.00 then we went for a walk around the inner city

A better class of busker here

Beautiful statues, beautiful harbour, beautiful people ,all hurrying to work on their ebikes and electric scooters. This busker was set up and playing at 8.40 on the bridge over the Rhone. It was a lovely sound which you wouldn’t expect on the streets. Especially at that hour. We have booked a hotel further along the Rhone at Bellegard sur Velserine. Only 45 kms away so it should be easy.

This should have been an omen

After getting lost a couple of times trying to pick up the trail, we resorted to google Maps and set a course for Chansey which looked logical

Superb bikeway for 20 kms.
Just coming in to Chansey

And this is where we went wrong. There is no cycleway beside the Rhone until you get to Seyssel. Its mostly gorge and the roads don’t go near it. Unfortunately I had booked at Bellegarde sur valserine which would take us on a main road through the gorge and off the cycle route to Seyssel.

Valleiry. Changing the recycling bins. Such a tidy system
Valleiry monument to the resistance WW2

Now I’d really appreciate some guidance on this one art lovers ! What has a naked woman rubbing a naked mans back got to do with Resistance fighters. He’s certainly not offering any resistance! It’s getting very hot and we’re going through heaps of water

That’s the last of it

We crossed the Rhône to the right bank and joined the D984. Its only 10kms to go but the first 5 are a climb and the traffic was thick. To make matters worst we came across a tunnel about 70 metres long. It had a little path on one side about half a metre wide so we walked on that with our bikes on the edge of the road. Safe enough but the noise was horrendous. On the other side was the L’Ecluse castle so we stopped for a breather and went and explored it.

Another of the Earl of Savoys castles. This one protected the entrance to Geneva. The cliff above it is where the tunnel went through. Up until 1938 all traveller’s still had to pass through the castle gates .If we had known we could have followed that old road ( just a small track now ) and avoided the tunnel
As you can see there’s no chance of a cycle way along the river
Bellegarde sur Valserine

The last 5 kms into town were exhilarating. We needed to move fast to keep cool. As you can see it’s 38 degrees and I’m off to find some beers 🍺
