Arles

I had trouble sleeping last night . I felt like I was rolling out of bed ! I turned the light on and sure enough, the boat had a list to port. I fixed that by jamming a bunch of Avignon brochures under the legs on my side. Perfect ! Thought I’d mention that because I had several emails this morning saying how idyllic our romantic night in a boat sounded.

There was no secure bike place so I bought them on board

Now this proprietor boasted that this was a romantic back to nature retreat with everything organic . The toilet was the old fashioned THUNDERBOX ! Throw sawdust into it after using it… Christine was not impressed. Instead of a bowl of fruit there, for the free use of guests was a bowl of Condoms with a sign above them saying that these are genuine GREEN condoms ie. gluten free. Oh well ,we are in France

6.30 Sunday morning and very quiet as we roll through Aramon
Montfrin. A crowd is starting to gather for a boules tournament
By the time we got to Comps we were ready for a coffee boost.
We could only buy the coffee at the cafe . He pointed us down the street to the Boulanger for our food. Very common in small towns.
The bells were ringing out and the locals were turning up for morning mass. The last to wander past was the priest. Slept in I guess
Tarascon. The Chateau and the cathedral could be seen from a long way out
And it was here that we picked up Eurovelo 8 quite by accident. It’s a brand new section to Arles from Tarascon and is not even on the Eurovelo App yet. ( EV 8 goes from Spain through to Italy and it’s what we will follow to Barcelona)
Almost dead straight beside the railway and road. It’s getting hot again but Arles is close

Once again we managed to get in before midday and the hot part of the day. It’s certainly been the way to travel. Our BnB was a contactless appartement again. They just gave you a code to get in after you had booked and paid online . This one is beautiful ( especially after Mr Nature’s boat) and so we settled back to watch the last day of the Tour de France 🇫🇷

We went a kilometre into town on the bikes for dinner and to look around this lovely old place

After 2000 years the colosseum is still intact and in regular use. Mostly for bullfights and various other sports that entail bulls . It was just closing and will be closed tomorrow as well mores the pity. Those Romans were amazing engineers eh!
