Gerona

Oriol prepared breakfast for us early this morning ( 6.30 instead of 8am ) to let us get away early. The best route was up and over a huge hill with a monastery on top but Christines knee isn’t up to that much climbing so he told us of an alternative route that would still avoid most of the busy roads. We started by going over the old stone bridge and taking the ancient track into la Pera

Shortly out of La Pera we turned right at Pedrinya to take the short cut to Sant Martí Vell
The first kilometre was so steep we must have pushed the bikes nearly the whole way. It’s a metal road but quite pretty and not a car in sight
Sant Martí Vell.

Two massive chimneys stand testament to a bygone enterprise. I think they made paper here ?

Without going back into the hills our only way to get in to Gerona from here ,is to get on the main road for about a kilometre . The speed limit for this stretch is 70kms / hour and it wasn’t that bad actually.

The northern approach to Gerona runs beside a lake with lots of shade trees.
The railway line floats above the traffic right through the city. We thought we would have a look inside the cathedral to fill in time ( it’s only been 25kms today) but when they wanted €8 each we quickly lost interest.
Important lesson. Don’t just tie your bike up by the front wheel
Tourists everywhere and a lot of American accents. Good to see the tourism industry back on its feet again
The CMC hotel was a pleasant surprise. Not the charm of La Pera but heavily discounted for tonight ,it was great value

By sheer luck we have stumbled upon a ‘green bike way’ Vias Verdes del Carrilet, an old railway line which runs from Olot via Gerona to the coast at Sant Feliu de Guixols. Oriol gave me lots of information on it and we’re looking forward to it tomorrow.
