Bad Schandau

This part of Europe was expecting heavy rain today and we were going to stay another night. However it’s another sunny day so we’ll go the 56kms on to Bad Schandau

I’d bought a pair of new handlebar grips last night and they needed an Allen key to fit them. These handy bike repair stations are set up on the trail near every town and they’ve got everything you’d need
There are these bunkers about every 300metres aimed at the West Bank ( such was the demand to come and live under communist rule)
The second most popular form of transport. Roller blades. They move fast too .
Roses do well in this climate. We are approaching Decin and it’s time for a coffee stop. Also gives me a chance to use a cafes’ wifi to book a room for the night
The young people of Decin gave us a send off. (They then had to take hold of their handle on the snake again)
Built in 1709 and still good for a cyclist
Politics hasn’t really changed though. These guys took the credit for it
Decin is a jumping off point for raft and canoe trip downstream ( looks exciting eh )

So far we’ve passed lots of wharves and cranes , but not a ship on any of them. Obviously made redundant by the fast trains

The canyon gets narrower and the river runs faster. Good news for us as the trail runs downhill more. Add to that a tail wind, a sunny day and we’re a couple of happy kiwis 🥝
The cable ferry uses the current to pull itself across. Note the anchor,? the river is quite low
It nudges ashore on the far bank to pick up a van
Hrensco, which means we must be in Germany 🇩🇪 Theres no border marked on our side of the river ( left bank )
This is the first eating place open today and we’re famished. Garlic soup for me and Spanish something something on bargettes for Christine. Problem was when I came to pay , and only had Czechia crowns on me. “Nein! Nein! Euros only please” Thank God for plastic !
Same humiliating experience as we were about to take the ferry across to Bad Schandau but they wouldn’t take plastic so we just biked up and over the bridge.

We have an apartment tonight so I’ll enjoy cooking a meal, AND getting some Euros
