Belgern

It’s gone 6am and we’ve been awake since 5.00. That’s the trouble with going to bed by 7.30 We’ll get breakfast in Riesa, our first large town

This is Eurovelo 7 at the moment. ( I thought it was only 6 kms to Riesa ). As it turned out there were several detours in place and it ended up being 13kms.

There was a Nestles supermarket with a bakery attached so while we breakfasted I used their wifi to catch up on various things back in Katikati. The supermarket had a front basket for my bike which I’ve been searching for since we arrived

The securing bolts were too short so my new best friend Michael ran back to his van and found me some. These baskets I find are much handier than a front bag and only €10
The main roads are busy with morning traffic but the bike trail, or radweg in German, are quiet. The trail is on streets when it comes to a town
Lorenzkirch is where the advancing US army built a floating bridge on their push East
And met up with THEIR new best friends , the Russians. May 1945
The old engineering shop close by has seen better days ( a bit like that fuzzy friendship)
Crossing a section of cobbles. Note the technique . ( sore bum syndrome)
The gravel wasn’t so bad and at least the forest gave shade. It got up to 30* today
Muhlberg Elbe. They’re raising the stop banks around the town. The Elbe has such a massive catchment going right back up to the polish border that it must flood hugely
Belgern Rathouse ( council offices )

Guarding the town square is the Roland statue. It’s a symbol of authority in Saxony

We found a cafe in the same square and used its wifi to get a bed for the night. Beats knocking on doors. This couple were doing the same trip as us to Cuxhaven but a lot faster ! They’re from Switzerland, he’s 78 and not long ago rode from Sydney to Geneva

Now that’s really made us feel fat and lazy !😩
