Magdeburg

Let me start with a good whinge about our ‘Cheap and cheerful ‘

It was clean ( number 1 priority) and facilities adequate, but they use those reusable plastic keys that they reprogram for each guest. Everything was fine so we went out for dinner. Returned at 8pm and hello ! We couldn’t open the door. Staff had gone home and although I had the hotel chains number, my phone won’t work over here. Fair enough, I asked a bunch of teddy boys nearby if they could ring for me. Half an hour of waiting room music and he got someone. “No problem ,we’ll send someone down”. 2 hours later I was seriously looking at breaking a window but knocked on a door next to our room instead. The man came to the door dripping wet, I’d obviously dragged him from the shower. But, He couldn’t do enough for us. An hour later he actually spoke to a human ( a man who obviously knew something) who advised us. “No problem, look under the pot plant out the front. That key is for any door in the Hotel”

HOLY CRAP !

Hey ! we had a good nights sleep after all that. Safe in the knowledge that we were in a really secure hotel. It’s only 18km to Magdeburg and I’ve rented a whole apartment for the weekend. After 5 km we were in the outer suburbs so only had to follow the trams in to ‘Zentrum’
This is the turning point at the end of the line
Free but still nothing in English this is certainly the seedy side of Magdeburg
We’ve seen so many of these . Usually with at least 2 kids in , or a few pets. Battery assist of course.
About 300 metres from our apartment is the Hundertwassers Green Citadel. Appartments and retail building. Sadly he died in 2003 just before it was finished. Of course he also designed Kawakawa’s toilets and Whangarei’s art centre

It was good to do a ‘proper’ shop at our nearby supermarket and to cook a meal in a ‘proper’ kitchen.

It’s a 3 roomed apartment right in the centre city for an unbelievable $100 / night
