This was definitely one of our better stays . Before leaving I commented on the very small and very low garage door. Our lovely hostess explained ( through mr google) that under the old system it wasn’t good to show your wealth. To own a car and several motorcycles you were classed as one of the bourgeois
4 legs good, 2 legs BETTER ( quote from animal farm. An anti communist comedy)The families prize DURANTJust out of Domitz we passed through a hilly and rough 5km section. (Bit of a shock to the system after all the beautiful surfaces so far)But by the village of Rutterburg it was smooth going again.
We want to make Bleckede today. Only 54km away so we’ve decided to chance our luck on finding accommodation there. It shows as having an information centre which is usually a help, but no Booking.com places
“Do you speak English ?” These ladies were pleading. “We need a feking coffee shop!” IRISH. They were going to Prague ,but didn’t have a map and had no idea where they were. They were the O’Donnel twins from Tipperary ( you can guess what I was singing for the next half an hour)And this pair from Denmark ,similarly ,didn’t have the Elbe map either. They think their phones are all you needThe river is getting wider and slower now and the ferries are big motorised ones. Here we are crossing at Neu Darchau. We can see a COFFEE SHOP from hereThere’s an old railway running beside us as we approach Bleckede
Bleckede! Where things started going wrong . The information centre was actually just a pole in the middle of town. Phone numbers of some Pensions but I couldn’t use my phone to ring ,so started knocking on a couple of doors. Full ! It’s the start of the summer holidays ! I found a place 8km out of town on booking.com so grabbed it
The Ellernhof. Miles from anywhere and totally deserted. We charged our battery on an outside plug and sent several emails and messages to Booking.com, nothing, Even rang the property just to hear it ringing inside. Nothing.!
After waiting 2 hours we decided to give up and go 1 km back to the nearest village and try the hotel/Pension there.
WELL ! We met a group of 4 sisters staying there, and had a very sociable time while the kind hotel owner tried to find us a roomThe pension was new but the hotel was historical and still had the ‘hay’ room which he offered us. We don’t have sleeping bags so I politely declined ( last thing I felt like was a roll in the hay anyway)
Marius , the owners son in law, came to our rescue. He rang around the pensions in Bleckede and found us one. He then proceeded to load us into his kombi and take us there. Marius spent time travelling and working in New Zealand and he said he was just paying back all the many kindnesses he had received there. KARMA !
Really gives you faith in human nature doesn’t it. Thank you Marius
