Ochsenwerder

Hot and sticky last night. The forecast said thunderstorms at 6.00am but clearing by 7.00. You’ve got to admire the German Forecaster’s , right on 6.00 the thunder let rip with a quick cloudburst and sure enough it was gone by 7.00.

This pension Didn’t have breakfast which suited us as we were gone by 7.00. 5km along we came to a Netto supermarket and bought yoghurt and bananas for breakfast . And a croissant for good measure.

The bikeway ran beside the main road all the way to Geesthacht. Noisy and boring but we wanted to make good progress this morning, not knowing what it would be like as we got near Hamburg .

Getting here might have been boring but getting out was proving anything but.

We followed signs that took us out to the suburbs but it felt wrong so we doubled back and tried to pick up the bike route signs again. Thank goodness for McDonalds, we came across one and used their wifi to plot an escape from this place

Ahhh ,we’re back on the stopbank again so I know where we are
We chose Ochsenwerder because it is just 12km out of Hamburg and also because it shows 4 pensions . C6-9 .
Campervan parkover spot. There were many more out of the picture
zollenspieker. We’re not catching the ferry, just enjoying a break from the head wind with a cup of tea and a Curryworst mit pommes( curried sausages with chips )

We knew we had to find the correct bike trail here or we’d get lost going in to Hamburg

Someone in a service station told us where to find it. Sure enough it’s an old railway line. The signage is terrible ! It’s been so good all the way from Prague
We stopped at a children’s playground, done in a train theme, then carried on ….
Buggar me days ! It bought us back out to the river again. The teacher in charge of this class was able to explain our mistake. At the playground the line forked off in another direction. We should have gone that way. Not a single sign telling us though. She was keen for the girls to practice their English on us and explain the way. Now I’m more confused than ever !😩
Finally found a sign to Fünfhausen so I knew we were on the right track. A Dressage arena. It’s a big sport in Germany and they are current Olympic champions
Ochsenwerder. An elderly couple let out rooms on the top floor . Breakfast provided , first shared bathroom we’ve had and he won’t tell me what the price is until morning. Bit of a worry wouldn’t you say. Still, at the end of a hard days biking he knows he’s got you by the proverbial short and curlies
We walked down the road to the local for a meal. It was an old lock keepers house until being converted into a pub
Now this is the specialty of the house. Matjes are a local delicacy. Raw fish on various different accompaniments. I’ve had it before and believe me it’s disgusting regardless of what you disguise it with.

Let’s hope it’s not Matjes for breakfast.
