Apen

On our way out of Varel we met a group of about 12 elderly Germans on e-bikes coming the other way. “ Roads blocked, turn back !” They said. We followed them for a little way trying to find another route until we thought we could do better

We couldn’t actually and when we met up with Ross from Holland we worked it out with the help of google maps and were soon on our way
After Grabstede we saw this little museum next to a huge brickworks
From Varel to Apen there are huge deposits of special clay just under the topsoil . The topsoil is stripped back and the clay which is about a metre deep taken away to a brickworks .The topsoil is then replaced and resown . This clay makes a very special heat resistant brick.

We were told to look for fields that were lower from the road than usual. ( already stripped) Red dots mark old brickworks but today there is only this one operating

The curator of the museum also makes pottery from the clay
Apart from a Bakery there’s this little automated milk product shop
The cycleway is on little farm lanes with almost no traffic. Suns out, wind has stopped , what’s not to be happy about!
Sitting on the road we came across this baby owl. No idea what he was doing there but he wasn’t too bothered by us

Apen. We were here by 3.30 but unusually,we weren’t allowed access until 5pm.

This place is huge and one of the cheapest yet so we’re not complaining
