Ossenzijl

We woke up to light rain which didn’t bother us too much except that our breakfast was served in a gazebo in the garden. It was all very nice but we were bundled up to keep warm. It’s only 25km to Ossenzijl but with showers forecast that’s all we want. The first 10km to Steenwijk was almost all on these brick roads. I love the way they lay it differently for the bike lanes

Steenwijk. It rained for 20 minutes on the way here so we sheltered under a tree. This statue has something to do with the Dutch triumph over the Spanish who for a long time governed Holland
Steenwijk has a big Indonesian population and is well known for its Indonesian market days. We’re in luck because it’s on today and all the inner town is a buzz with stalls
A really shit hot Indonesian band was playing in the town square. Half the audience was up line dancing by the time they’d finished this number.
While at the other end of the street in the cathedral there was a concert by a very talented pipe organ player. No one was inspired to get up and line dance though and I really didn’t think it was my place to start.
TV screens were on every wall

Imagine going to a concert where the instrument was so big the audience had to watch him play on closed circuit television.

Steenwijk/Ossenzijl canal.

It was really easy to find this village after that ,as we just had to follow the canal

Hello ! This one belongs to a kiwi. The bikes are all there but no one was home
As a matter of interest, the reeds that make the thatch are the ones in the foreground. Cheap? In the old days maybe but now well over double the price but it’s the prestige ! Also they’re a lot more to insure because of the fire risk. Fire works are a dirty word in thatch country
Ossenzijl. It’s a town made up of lots of canal housing. We’re staying 2 nights here in the De Kluft Recreatiecentrum.

It’s another national park and as well as biking, there’s lots of different boats for hire. Mmmmmm 🤔
