The city of the Golden gates

Sunday is a good day to be a tourist in Nancy as the buses are free. Also the museums are half price entry for us oldies 😳

Not far away was Stanislas square. Over a hectare in size and described as one of the most beautiful squares in the world

Stanislas was a former King of Poland and the last Duke of Lorraine. He built the square in the 18th century as a tribute to his son in law ,King Louis the 14th. (When I say he built it I’m guessing he had help )

Each corner had golden gates which gave the city its nickname
Off one corner was the city cathedral
While the northern entrance was through the arc de triumph de Nancy.

There was the Sunday craft market going on under it so we went shopping

On the free bus now and we’re off to see Nancys world famous museum ‘l’école de Nancy ‘. ( thanks to some very timely advise from Di )

And so began the Art Nouveau era for which Nancy was to be the world centre

Two stories high, the entire house was a massive work of art. Well worth the visit thanks Di

On the walk back we fell in with this chap. He explained the retirement system and how much they get etc. They retire here at 62 which he had just reached and like New Zealand, it’s enough if you own your own house. Otherwise….

Back at our apartment for the rest of the day to watch the Olympics

We aren’t going far tomorrow so we’ll have a late start after an enjoyable break
