Niderviller

We didn’t wait for breakfast today , instead I waited beside the port building for the travelling Boulanger to arrive

She had fruit as well so we had enough for a French breakfast
The rechicourt Le chateau lock. Built later in 1963 it replaced a lot of smaller locks to save 2 hours of travelling time

We’ve been waiting to come across this one. It raises the boats 17 metres in one lock. The gate is a guillotine type at the bottom, at least 600 mm thick solid steel

The bollards are on a slide and travel up with the boat
They’re a long way down but it filled up remarkably quickly
And on their way again
By now we are fairly high up in the Vogue ranges and there are lakes stretching out on either side of us

At this stage a heavy black cloud was approaching from behind and we thought we were in for a drenching. It didn’t drop on us but the wind gusted hard from behind which was scary, blowing us along with us hardly pedaling

The bridge over the canal was closed for repairs. We had to get over as the path had changed sides. (They didn’t stop us anyway)
Xouaxange
The canal passed under us here so we stopped and finished off the last of the goodies I’d bought this morning. This must be the highest part of the Marne Rein canal because tomorrow it goes down the famous Arzviller incline
Made it ! We’re early for our chambre dote so we have lunch and a beer at the local pub.
She let us in at 3pm so we’ve got plenty of time for watching the Olympics after we’ve done the usual.( shower, wash clothes, edit photos, do blog, book a place for tomorrow night). I tell you ,travelling is a lot of work
