Colmar

I opened the curtains at 6.30 and saw this on the other side of the street. The man in the cage to the left is working the Crane by remote. Another 2 men in full safety suits with respirators were taking off the asbestos roof. What a great sight to start the day
It looked a very complicated route to Colmar and I photographed the map to make sure we avoided any busy roads

We headed towards the Vosges ranges and then followed them nearly all the way

It’s such a pretty ride with lots of small villages tucked against the hills. And forts all the way along .

The Vosges have always been a very strategic range for holding back invading armies. During WW1, the ‘western front’ at this eastern end ,ran the whole way along the top. They’re still finding human remains

I need not have worried about finding the route though. We discover we’re on EV5 and it’s well signposted all the way to Colmar.
This young fellow was collecting straw with his bike and trailer. Probably for the chooks
Bennwihr. We had to wait half an hour for the bar to open but the shade was good anyway. It’s 27°
When the allies were advancing towards Germany towards the end of WW2 the German army made a stand here. There was not a building left standing afterwards and there are several memorials to the American troops
That cafe didn’t have food but we did a spot of grazing on the blackberries anyway
Ok, we’re in Colmar and sitting outside the BnB hotel about to go in. Just as well I checked my emails because I realised that there are THREE BnB hotels in Colmar and ours is another 3 kms into town.

It’s too hot to go looking around Colmar so we’ll do that tomorrow morning as we leave town. Right now there’s an Aldi nearby to get something to eat and a cold beer.
