Montchanin

So here is the problem for the engineers of the mid 1800s. How do you get the shipping from the Loire valley to the Saône . The highest point is where we are tonight at Montchanin, so they built a huge reservoir, fed by a local stream which kept the locks full. We have come up 200 metres since Chalon-sur-Saône .

HELP ! But first to get out of Chalon ! Our bikes were in the basement behind this security gate. Christine got stuck half way over
And since we are trying to get away early we like to find a Boulanger along the way that sells coffee as well .
The main round out of town crossed the canal du-centre so that was an easy start
We thought Chagney would be the highest point but it was still rising as it passed by . A bridge took the canal over the railway line . The embankment was huge !
We meet up with a couple more Australian boaties. Turns out they were Cronulla fans so we didn’t get too friendly. I think they were sick of the climb to here and they still had 23 locks to go
At saint Leger-sur-Dheune we crossed the canal in search of coffee and a pastry
What a fortuitous stop. We met a Swiss chap named Peter who invited us to drop in to see his home since we were passing it on our way
Peter was a cobbler who has turned his hand to making top of the line hand bags
They were truly beautiful and we had to wrestle this one off Susan. and it was only $1400
Christine would have been happy with the treadle sewing machine
Really cool Peter but you know sheds are for Tractors and boats and things. Fair go!
Nearly there . Just one more bank of 7 locks .Phew !

I suppose everyone knows that a coiffure in France is a hairdresser but I didn’t realise until today that some are specialists ……

It’s been a hard day for us oldies and this pizza place was like an oasis to us.Coca- cola all round . Susan found us a ‘short cut’ through the golf course to our hotel
We’ve got a nice bottle of burgundy for tonight since we’re in that region
