Nanteuil-lès-Meaux

We need to get down to Meaux where we meet up with the Marne but I’m really not sure how. There’s some busy roads around here which we want to avoid.

The hotel provided breakfast , cornflakes coffee and croissants . The French aren’t big breakfast eaters I’m thinking 🤔
I assembled the bikes. Happy to see no damage (unlike last year)

At Monthyon we turned off to follow a bike route through a battle of Marne site.
So far so good. That hill yonder was one of the sites.
But it soon deteriorated into a track.
It’s not cold but we’ve had a light shower . Just enough to make the track greasy. This old soldier marks the top of the hill

The battle of the Marne was in September 1914. The Germans were closing in fast on Paris and General Jeffre shifted 5000 troops to this area to outflank them using ALL of Paris’s 600 taxis. It WORKED and he saved Paris

At Penchard, The owner of a kebab place came out to show us the way to Meaux4kms down that way
The church always marks the centre of town as we come into Meaux .
And of course Christine had to go in and have a look

Now that we’ve crossed the Marne for the first time we go south another 2kms to Nanteuil-lès-Meaux to our bed for the night

They gave us a ground floor room so we could take our bikes inside. Cheap and cheerful. But not bad at $130 nz.😁

I’m having trouble publishing this site with WordPress
